The deaths and injuries caused by distracted driving are higher than ever before. As a Renton Personal Injury Attorney, I’ve seen a lot of the repercussions that come from distracted driving. Texting behind the wheel, talking on a cell phone, or even changing the radio station has been the cause of thousands of deaths and hundreds of thousands of injuries every year. While laws are in place to decrease the number of distracted driving accidents, millions still practice unsafe habits such as texting while driving, and talking on a cell phone.
Monday morning, January 10th, a black Buick Sedan collided with a utility pole in Seattle in an accident that was likely a result of some form of distracted driving. The two occupants in the vehicle were traveling westbound down a hill on Southwest Charlestown near 47th Avenue Southwest when the driver lost control of the vehicle and left the road- crashing into an electricity pole. The force of the impact caused the utility pole to break off resulting in a power outage to some 2,000 Seattle City Light customers. Both of the occupants in the Sedan were transported to Harborview Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.
On any given day, 800,000 drivers use a cell phone and hundreds of distracted driving accidents occur as a result. But while laws have been implemented to reduce the number of people driving with distraction- people continue to ignore these laws and suffer the consequences. Adhering to these laws and driving responsibly is important to prevent the thousands of deaths and millions of injuries on the road.
