I was rear-ended by someone and they’ve offered to pay me a fair amount for damages if I agree to proceed without getting our insurance companies involved. Should I take their offer?
Almost every time I hear about this happening it’s because something has gone horribly, horribly wrong.
It’s almost never a good idea to do this. What happens is your desire to be nice to the other person in the moment is going to wind up costing you hundreds, thousands, maybe tens of thousands of dollars later when they’re unable to actually pay for your damages.
Then you’re going to bring a claim with the insurance company and the insurance company is going to say, “why did you wait so long to bring this claim?” And they’re going to think it’s a fraudulent claim.
This is almost never an okay thing to do. I would always involve the insurance companies right away. Honesty is the best policy.
