The Sound Transit light rail trains have been around for a few years now, so you would think that people would be used to them being here by now. But every few months, we seem to hear new reports of someone being injured by one. The most recent incident occurred this morning in the SoDo District, just south of Safeco Field. The light rail train hit a man, believed to be in his 50s. He was taken to Harborview Medical Center after suffering heavy trauma. He was last reported to be in critical condition.
One witness says that there are gates that protect pedestrians and other traffic from crossing the tracks when a train is approaching. The man should have seen the gates and would have easily been able to avoid being hit. Investigations into the event and the series of events leading up to it are still in the works. The rain operator was not found to be impaired. All warning signals were active and working properly and nothing faulty was found upon inspection of the train.
Stay away and off of train tracks. They are not playgrounds. Trains are very heavy, very dangerous pieces of equipment and you should not put yourself in the path of one, ever. Always be careful to look for warning signals and listen carefully for them as well.
