When a motor vehicle collides with a pedestrian, there is a very high potential for serious injury due to the unprotected nature of an unsuspecting pedestrian. As a Seattle pedestrian accident attorney in a Bellevue injury law firm, I am aware of the staggering statistics about pedestrian auto accidents. According to the NHTSA Traffic Safety Facts, a pedestrian is injured in a traffic accident every 8 minutes. In 2008, there were more than 69,000 pedestrians injured in traffic accidents and in Washington state, there were 63 pedestrians killed in traffic accidents – 12.1% of all traffic related fatalities. 4,378 pedestrians died in traffic accidents in 2008, a 16% decrease from the number reported in 1998. While this shows improvement, the number of pedestrians affected by traffic accident-related deaths and injuries is still too high. Both pedestrians and drivers need to be more aware of the dangers that automobiles pose to vulnerable pedestrians.
At about 7:30 pm on Thursday, February 12, William Lamson, 20, was refueling his vehicle on Regatta Drive near the intersection of Highway 20 in Oak Harbor when he was hit by a motorcycle traveling northbound. The driver has been identified as John Newell, 22, from Oak Harbor. After landing, Lamson was then struck by a second vehicle, a station wagon traveling southbound. The driver of the second vehicle has been identified as Ryan Wright, 23, also of Oak Harbor. Lamson was rushed to Whidbey General Hospital with serious injuries, and from there he was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center. According to Oak Harbor Chief of Police Rick Wallace, Lamson was in critical condition on Friday morning, and the hospital did not return calls regarding his condition on Friday afternoon. An investigation is underway, but there is no indication that reckless driving, speed, or alcohol were factors leading to the accident.
Pedestrians who have been struck by vehicles often sustain serious injuries that are life changing. Those who have been injured in pedestrian accidents are entitled to seek compensation for the damages caused by the accident and should speak with an experienced Seattle injury lawyer as soon as possible.
