Most pedestrian accidents are avoidable and it seems like one that occurred in Renton yesterday was no different. Two teenage boys were in the 3700 block and attempting to cross NE 4th Street when a vehicle struck them. According to drivers and police, that particular road gets very busy, especially at 5 PM, with so many people commuting. There was no crosswalk where the boys were crossing. They managed to avoid being hit by one vehicle heading eastbound, whose driver saw the teens in time and was able to steer clear of them. However, another car heading eastbound did not see them until it was too late. He slammed on his brakes, but stuck both boys. Both survived the accident, but were taken to local hospitals. One is suffering from head and body injuries and the other from body injuries.
Whether your kids are 5 or 15, it’s important to make sure that they know how to be responsible pedestrians. Always encourage them to use crosswalks and follow traffic signals. You’re never too young or too old to hear the words “look both ways.” Remind them to stay on the sidewalks and out of the roads. Taking a few extra strides to get to a crosswalk instead of crossing busy streets where they please can make all the difference.
