As a Seattle bicycle accident attorney, I am aware of the safety precautions that cyclists need to utilize in order to be safe while on the road. Things like a helmet and reflective gear are important but so is paying attention to your environment. Being aware of other cars and upcoming road obstructions is vital in bicycle safety. According to the SPD Blotter, a bicyclist was severely injured when he hit a car in the evening of Thursday October 20th. The bicyclist was in the right lane going south on Aurora Avenue North when he hit a Hyundai sedan who was also traveling south in the middle lane of the street. According to reports, the bicyclist turned into the car suddenly and without warning causing the collision. The driver was uninjured but the bicyclist suffered severe head injuries and was taken to a local hospital. The accident is still under investigation but so far alcohol is not suspected.
The Bicycle Helmet Safety Institute reported that collisions between bicycles and motor vehicles accounted for 75.7 percent of bicycle fatalities. In addition to this, head injuries accounted for 62.6 percent of bicycle fatalities. Being cautious about wearing a helmet and providing space for others on the road is important when considering going for a bike ride.
