We hear and read about a lot of motorcycle accidents in the summertime because once the weather starts to get nice more and more motorcyclists hit the road. As a Renton motorcycle accident lawyer working at a Seattle personal injury law firm, I know that a lot of people have a negative bias towards motorcyclists, a lot of the accidents that we hear about happened because the rider was going excessively fast or trying to pass traffic on the shoulder. There are a lot of motorcycle accidents that happen because a driver wasn’t paying attention, but there are some motorcyclists who so clearly fit the reckless driver stereotype that they give a bad name to all riders.
Saturday night two teenagers were injured when they crashed the dirt bike they were riding into a pickup truck that was attempting to make a left hand turn. The driver 16-year-old Roman Hernandez was driving excessively fast and not paying attention when he tried to pass the driver of the pickup truck, 41-year-old James Smiskin, who was in the process of completing a left hand turn when Hernandez crashed into him. Hernandez and his passenger, 16-year-old Andrez Acevedo, both suffered severe personal injuries; Hernandez was taken to Yakima Regional Medical and Cardiac Center, Acevedo was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center.
The Washington State Patrol said that alcohol was involved in this motorcycle accident and charges are pending. I hope that both boys make a full recovery, but I am horrified by the fact that they both jumped on that dirt bike intoxicated and were speeding down the road. What in the world were they thinking and where were their parents? Teaching your teen about safe driving and the consequences of drunk driving can save lives. The two boys are very lucky that they didn’t die from this motorcycle accident, hopefully in the future they will think twice before ever doing anything like this again because next time they may not be so lucky.
