Closures of the Alaskan Way Viaduct are scheduled for the next two weekends according to King 5 News. State Route 99 will be closed in both directions from the Battery Street Tunnel to the West Seattle Bridge. As a Seattle car accident attorney, I can tell you that traffic congestion often results in accidents. Presumably, the impact of this will be heavier than normal traffic downtown, so if you live or are planning to spend time downtown over the weekend, you may want to leave extra time for yourself to travel. The reason for the closures is inspection of the viaduct. The Washington Department of Transportation (WSDOT) will be inspecting the viaduct to be sure that it remains safe for use. With the increased congestion downtown during the closure, drivers will need to be particularly careful to avoid accidents.
Sometimes when highways are highly congested, traffic accidents become more common, and can be more serious. Every year, there are millions of traffic accidents, resulting in tremendous numbers of serious injuries and even deaths. No one wants or expects to be involved in a traffic accident, and fortunately most accidents result in property damage only, with no injuries or fatalities. However, when a serious traffic accident occurs, the consequences can be severe.
