As a Seattle pedestrian accident attorney, I encourage all pedestrians to follow the rules of the road and use crosswalks and designated areas to ensure your safety and the safety of others. Pedestrians also need to be aware of other vehicles on the road and proceed with caution even if you are using the crosswalks properly. The Seattle Police Department Blotter has reported a vehicle hit and severely injured a pedestrian around 11:30p.m. Wednesday night. The accident occurred near North 105th St. and Aurora Avenue North. A Ford Taurus, driven by a 20 year old man struck a 22 year old woman while she was trying to cross the street. The woman was immediately taken to a nearby hospital with a serious head injury. The driver was uninjured in the accident. The collision is still under investigation and it is still unclear if the pedestrian was using a crosswalk at the time of the accident. The driver of the Taurus is also under investigation of driving while impaired.

Pedestrians are often vulnerable to vehicles on the road due to their close proximity and their fragile state. According to The Pedestrian and Bicycle Information Center, nearly 4,000 deaths occurred in 2009 due to vehicle/pedestrian collisions. This is equivalent to 11 deaths a day. Because of the dangers the road may bring, pedestrians need to be alert and responsible when crossing streets.
