A driver who may have been drinking is believed to be responsible for a head-on collision on the Aurora Bridge last night according to KOMO news. As a Seattle drunk driving accident lawyer, I have seen too many people whose lives were changed for the worse by drunk drivers. While no definite information is out, and no charges have been filed, police believe that a man who drove a box truck across the center line on Aurora near 38th Ave was drinking, and he is being investigated for vehicular assault. After crossing the center line, the truck struck an SUV driven by a 70-year-old man head-on. Both men were taken to area hospitals with non-life threatening injuries.
Getting behind the wheel after drinking is dangerous and irresponsible behavior, but sadly it is all too common. With thousands of people killed in drunk driving accidents every year, and many many more injured, this is an issue that has really come to the forefront. No one has found a solution at the government level, but there is a very simple solution that every one of us can work on individually. Don’t get behind the wheel after drinking. There are so many ways to accomplish this. If you know that you will be out drinking, ask someone to refrain from drinking to act as a driver later. If you use this solution, make sure that you take a turn volunteering to be the designated driver. If you are at a friend’s home and realize that you have had too much to drink, spend the night, or call a cab or take a bus. You can always come back for your car later. And if you have a party at your own home, keep an eye on people as they leave. Suggest they spend the night or offer to call a cab for them if they have had too much to drink.
If everyone follows some of these simple pieces of advice, so much pain and trouble could be saved. Drunk driving accidents are so senseless, because avoiding them would have been so easy.
